True chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) belongs to the daisy family. Originally native to southern and eastern Europe, it is now widespread throughout almost all of Europe.
Indications
Traditional internal use for mild gastrointestinal complaints such as flatulence and mild cramps.
Traditional inhalation use for relieving cold symptoms.
Traditional use in the mouth for gargling in mild inflammation of the mouth and throat.
These uses are based exclusively on the product's long-standing traditional use in the stated areas of application.
Composition
Chamomile blossoms. Traditional herbal medicinal product used for gastrointestinal complaints, colds and mild inflammation of the mouth and throat.
Method of administration
For internal use by drinking and inhalation, and for use in the mouth for gargling and rinsing after preparing a tea infusion.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to chamomile blossoms and other plants from the daisy family.
Precautions for use and warnings
Children: Internal use is not recommended for children under 6 months of age.
Inhalation use is not recommended for children under 6 years of age because of the risk of scalding.
Use in the mouth is not recommended for children under 12 years of age due to insufficient data.
Safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding is sufficiently documented.
Interactions with other medicines
For internal use, effects on liver enzymes involved in the metabolism of medicinal products (cytochrome P450 system) have been reported in patients after kidney transplantation who took high doses over a longer period of time.
Dosage / Method of administration
Internal use: Pour 150 ml of boiling water over the recommended quantity of chamomile blossoms, cover and, if desired, strain through a tea sieve after about 5-10 minutes.
Adolescents from 12 years and adults including the elderly: single dose 1.5-4.0 g (1 heaped tablespoon), 1 cup 3-4 times daily.
Children 6-11 years: single dose 1.5-3 g (1 tablespoon), 1 cup 2-4 times daily.
Children 2-5 years: single dose 1.0-1.5 g (1 heaped teaspoon), 1 cup 2-4 times daily.
Children 6 months to 1 year: single dose 0.5-1.0 g (1 teaspoon), 1 cup 2-4 times daily.
Inhalation use: Pour 100 ml of boiling water over the recommended quantity and inhale the infusion. Adolescents from 12 years and adults: 3-10 g several times daily. Children 6-11 years: 2-5 g once or twice daily.
Use in the mouth: Pour 100 ml of boiling water over the recommended quantity, cover and, if desired, strain through a tea sieve after 5-10 minutes. Adolescents from 12 years and adults: 1-5 g several times daily for rinsing or gargling.
Loose tea: Prepare as described above and allow to infuse for about 5-10 minutes.
Filter bag: Use 1 tea bag per gram (approx. 1 g = 1 tea bag) according to the dosage above and pour over boiling water (approx. 150 ml). Leave to infuse for about 5-10 minutes.
Duration of use
If acute complaints persist for longer than one week, recur periodically or worsen, a doctor must be consulted.
Side effects
Hypersensitivity reactions, including severe allergic reactions such as shortness of breath, Quincke's oedema, circulatory collapse and anaphylactic shock after mucosal contact with liquid chamomile blossom preparations, have been reported. Frequency not known.
