Hayflowers (Flores graminis) are also known as grass blossoms. They are a mixture of blossom parts, seeds and smaller pieces of leaves and stems from various meadow plants. They consist mainly of couch grass, brome, perennial ryegrass, meadow fescue, timothy grass, meadow foxtail, sweet vernal grass and orchard grass. The harvested hay is cut by us and, by repeated sieving, freed from coarse stem parts, sand, dust and earth. In rural areas, hayflowers are considered to be all the plant parts that the hay fork does not pick up from the threshing floor. It is not uncommon to find a thick layer of hayflowers on the threshing floor.
The hayflower cushion has been used in folk medicine for centuries, whether to calm and relax tense muscles, improve the elasticity of connective tissue, increase circulation, as a liver compress, for kidney and bladder complaints or to activate tissue metabolism. It is also used for local heat therapy in degenerative rheumatic conditions.
Warning
Do not use on open injuries or acute rheumatic inflammations. In very rare cases, allergic skin reactions may occur.
Directions for use
It should be used externally as a moist-hot compress once or twice daily. The cushion should be heated in the oven at 150 °C. Not suitable for the microwave.
It is recommended to place 2-3 cups of water in the oven as well to ensure good moisture penetration. Heating over steam is also possible.
