The mate shrub (Ilex paraguariensis), also known as the mate tree, is native to South America. Mate is also the name of the popular South American infusion made from the finely cut dried leaves of this plant.

For drinking after preparing a tea infusion.
Preparation
Loose tea: Pour boiling water (approx. 150 ml) over 1 teaspoon of mate tea (approx. 3 g) and, if desired, strain through a tea sieve after about 10-15 minutes.
Filter bag: Pour boiling water (approx. 150 ml) over 1 tea bag and leave to infuse for about 10-15 minutes.
Note
Store protected from light and moisture.
